(in French) We often speak about Larp as a profound experience, during which we feel emotions first-hand and carry them with us for a long time. But where do these emotions come from? How do organizers generate them, and how do players use them? Is it a question of design, of setting, of game community? In this dynamic, not-too-serious conference, we’ll try to tackle these questions and provide some food for thought.

    Conference| Alessandro Giovanucci

    Saturday, October 28, 9:30-10:15 a.m.

        Souvenirs d’une gauchiasse repentie(in French)

(In French)What do you do when you have to play a character who is clearly not the good guy of the story? What do you do when you have to play an oppressor, even though in real life you campaign for greater equality and fairness?
Here I’m going to try to answer these questions by sharing the tips that helped me feel less guilty about preparing, playing and, after the game, letting go of characters who were racist/violent/oppressive/misogynist bastards/whatever qualifies as the opposite of what I am/think/militate in my TO life.

        Conference | Lucile

        Saturday, October 28, 10:15 to 11:15 a.m.

            The Sustainability Roleplaying Club Formula

What could be a workable model for sustaining a role-playing community in the long term? This presentation will look at the goals, aspirations and intentions to achieve this and the formula that the presenters propose for European teams.

(In french)In LARP, it’s sometimes expected to the larpers to organize themselves into groups. This can mean one-off groups of 5-6 people, but it can also often mean groups of 15-40 people with the ambition of lasting several years and incurring joint costs. That’s quite an adventure, both in and out of the game!

We’re going to take a closer look at this second type of group. How are they created? What drives them? How are decisions made? How does the group integrate new people and organize itself to last over time?

We met people who have taken part in groups that have risen to the challenge and gone the distance. The aim: to draw inspiration from their experience, provide food for thought on recurring difficulties, and suggest tools (notably based on self-management) to keep the feathering to a minimum.

                    Conference | Rachel & Arnaud

                    Saturday, October 28, 12pm-4pm

Larp in Erasmus+. Case studies and opportunitie

LARP events seem distinctively interesting in the eyes of the Erasmus+ Program, which is funding learning opportunities for young people. What makes it so special? What kind of opportunities are there waiting for young players and larp organizations? You will get the basic orientation in this field and hear a lot of case studies with pictures and videos. Expect questions and energizers. I’m representing Nausika Foundation, Poland, which is one of the main actors in this field, with a growing number of international projects. Perhaps we will arrange some kind of collaboration together?

                        Conference | Zbyszek Janczukowicz

                        Saturday, October 28, 2 – 3 p.m.

Lessons Learned: the evolution of a larp

The change of a hungarian larp through the years in scope and quality and what we larned from it. Difficulties and challanges when your game gets successfull and doubles in size and how you have to adapt as an organizer.

(In French)From drama to brawl, from tears to blades, from oppression to rebellion… But what are larpers looking for these days? The results of a Larpalot survey!

                                Conference | Larpalot

                                Saturday, October 28, 4:15pm – 5:15pm

(In French)At a time when today’s Larp movement is promoting the use of notes of intent and transparency, can an organization still afford to produce
scenarios with a 180° plot twist? Super surprise effect or breach of social contract? What about GNs that want to “keep the surprise” for their participants?

                                    Conference | Clueless Cora

                                    Saturday, October 28, 5:15-6:15 p.m.

TechnoLarp : objets de jeu interactifs à portée de toustes (In French)

(In French)Following our first presentation of Technolarp at BEtaLarp 2021, we’re back with a finalized project. TechnoLarp is a “turnkey” device design project aimed at making it possible for any organizer to integrate interactive game objects or scenery into their Larp. No knowledge of electronics or programming is required either to use TechnoLarp or to attend this conference.

During the conference, we will present the project and demonstrate our access devices on practical cases. The conference will also provide an opportunity to discuss possible follow-up to the Technolarp project.

Conference | Romain Féret-Bosquelle and Marcelin Delcour

(In French)Embodying immoral characters, actively seeking to do harm… in short, “Villains”, can happen to you in LARP. How do you manage your emotions before, during and after the game? Should you feel guilty about having fun playing someone who does and seeks to do atrocious things in-game? This talk will give you some pointers, based on the speaker’s extensive experience in this field!

Destroy the universe, that’s a no. Sardonic laughter, no. Neo-Nazis in flip-flops and gel-filled hair, no. Using the literature and psychology spearheaded by yours truly, we’re going to set the record straight on what nastiness is, the real kind, the kind that’ll really make you change your stance when your most handsome Larp villain approaches.

(In French) Larps are co-creations, meaning that the story evolves through proposals made by different players (organizers, PCs, NPCs, groups, etc.) and accepted (or rejected or modified) by the other parties involved. How do you identify a game suggestion? And how do you decide which ones to accept? According to what criteria? I invite you to dive into the theory and think about “what we do when we play”.

                                                            Conference | Rachel

                                                            Sunday, October 29, 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

(In French)Our view of the world is influenced by the stories we are told. Although this has improved in recent years, the TV and film industry too often uses the “Bury your gays” cliché (LGBT characters die or suffer tragedy far more often than straight ones). This and other clichés also appear in Larp. Yet it’s possible to write nuanced characters regardless of their sexual orientation. Sexual orientation shouldn’t be the main (or worse, the only) element in describing a character.

On the other hand, for queer gamers, having only straight or clichéd LGBT characters to play with can generate frustration or a feeling of being left out.

How do you write a nuanced LGBT character? What clichés should be avoided or misappropriated? Should a character’s sexual orientation always be written, or should it be left in the hands of the players?

“A hero is a hero, whether you’re male, female, gay, lesbian, straight, black, white or red all over – it doesn’t matter.” Andrew Garfield, about the Spiderman costume.

                                                                Sunday, October 29, 3 to 4 p.m.

« Juste des émotions » : penser le GN et la justice sociale avec Sara Ahmed [in French]

« La justice devient une forme de ressenti, qui relève d’un « sentiment-de-semblable », une capacité de ressentir des choses pour autrui et de compatir à sa douleur. »

This year, I propose to revive my own tradition of over-ambitious nerd stuff by trying to apply to LARP some thoughts from The Cultural Politics of Emotions (2004) by queer and racialized philosopher and activist Sara Ahmed. In this book, which fascinated me, she looks at how our emotions are shaped by the political context, and how politics seizes on them in return. I’m particularly interested in a passage from her conclusion, in which Ahmed questions a certain vision of justice that would be limited to feeling “the right emotions” – effectively erasing the material conditions of reparation and taking into account the wrongs done. His reflections, always nuanced, seem to me interesting for questioning the potentially pedagogical virtues of LARP, particularly with regard to issues linked to systemic oppressions. Ultimately, Ahmed says about emotions what we can already say about games: they’re “only” emotions… But maybe that’s something.

                                                                    Conference | Axiel Cazeneuve

                                                                    Sunday 29 october, 3:00 p.m.- 5:15 p.m.

C’est quoi tes valeurs ? (in French)

(In French)Who hasn’t experienced a moment of disagreement between their personal off-game values and those of their in-game character? How often are we tempted to recreate democracy in a feudal society? To play a heretic in a religious world?

Role-playing gives us the opportunity to project ourselves into alternative realities. Yet our contemporary values often get in the way of our decisions and interpretations. In this talk, we’ll look at the causes of this confusion, and suggest some ways of dealing with it.

                                                                        Conference | Gaspard

In this talk we’ll look back on the experience of this sandbox Larp: origin, conception, communication, realization and feedback from the participants.

I go wherever the lore, the universe, interests me to take pictures. During this meeting I’m going to talk about how I prepare before the GN, what equipment I take, what my complete workflow is when I get home, and how to make the shots available. There will be a fair amount of technical explanation (photographic terms), but also mental explanation in terms of the rules I use to blend into the game as much as possible. This will be my personal view and will be presented for information purposes only, in no way rigid or compulsory. You don’t need to be an expert in photography to understand what I do, and in any case I’m here to answer your questions too, within the limits of my knowledge.
